How many Babylons are there?
I suppose the Bible refers to three Babylons.
Historical geographical
Babylon
The prophet Jeremiah, in chapters 50 and 51, reports
the destruction of geographical Babylon ”The Word that Jehovah spoke against
Babylon, against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. Declare
among the nations, proclaim, and lift up a banner. Proclaim and do not hide it;
say, Babylon is captured, Bel is ashamed, Merodach is broken in pieces; her
images are withered up, her idols are broken in pieces. For out of the north a
nation comes up against her, which shall make her land a waste, and no one
shall dwell in it. They shall flee, they shall depart, both man and beast.” (Jer.50:1-3)
When will this happen? ”In those days, and at that time, says Jehovah, the
children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going
and weeping. They shall go and seek Jehovah their God."
(Jr.50:4) Israel’s weeping, or wailing, in my
understanding, began only in 1967. Since then Israel has been seeking the Lord
on the wailing wall, even still in unbelief. The time for the fulfillment of
this prophecy against Babylon is mature. ”Because of the Wrath of Jehovah it
shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly a waste. Everyone who goes by
Babylon shall be horrified and hiss at all her plagues."
(Jer.50:13) ”A sound of battle is in the land, and of great
destruction. How the hammer of the whole earth is chopped off and broken! How
Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!”(Jer.50:22-23)"A drought is
upon her waters; and they shall be dried up. For it is the land of graven
images, and they act madly and are in dread.” (Jer.50:38)Does ”A drought is
upon her waters; and they shall be dried up" by the way, not
refers to ”And the sixth angel poured out his bowl onto the great
river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from
the east might be prepared?” (Rev.16:12)”Therefore the beasts of the desert
shall dwell there with the
howling beasts. And the young owls shall dwell in it. And it shall not again be
inhabited forever; it shall not be lived in from generation to generation." (Jer.50:39)
Because of the historical Babylon is currently still inhabited shows that the
prophecy has not yet been fulfilled. The reason for it never to be inhabited
again seems to have to do with radiation contamination from nuclear bombs. It
is the moment when, perhaps, one bomb is detonated on the Euphrates river,
which temporarily dames the water to dry its bed downstream for the passage of the 200 million soldiers
army? Revelations affirms that an angel did this, but in the same way we read,
too, that the plagues of the 6th Trumpet were done by angels, though
executed by the army of 200 million soldiers.” So the four
angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were
released to kill a third of mankind. Now the number of the army of the horsemen
was two hundred million; and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the
horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates being fiery like
hyacinth and brimstone; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of
lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. By these three
plagues a third of mankind was killed; by the fire and the smoke and the
brimstone which came out of their mouths.”(Rev.9:15-18)" At the sound
of the capture of Babylon the earth quakes, and a cry is heard among the
nations.”(Jer.50:46) =
“sound of the capture” of detonated bombs? Bangs
of nuclear bombs? ”And I will send strangers into Babylon who shall
winnow her and shall empty her land. For in the day of calamity they shall be
against her all around" (Jer. 51:2) is also compatible with the
consequences of the invasion of the 200 million army. ”Babylon has
been a golden Bowl in Jehovah's hand, which made all the earth drunk. The
nations have drunk her wine; therefore the nations are deranged." (Jr.51:7)
Spiritual
Babylon
In Peter’s first letter we find the following statement: ”Those in
Babylon, elect together with you, greet you; and so does Mark my son."
(1Pe.5:13) Peter refers here to Rome with its spiritual name: ”Babylon”, and is not
referring to the geographical Babylon.
Spiritual Babylon is narrated in Revelation 17:1b-10a ”Come, I will
show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom
the kings of the earth prostituted themselves, and the inhabitants of the earth
were made drunk with the wine of her sexual perversities. So he carried me away
in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet
beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the
woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious
stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden Bowl full of abominations and
the filthiness of her sexual perversities. And on her forehead a name was
written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE
ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the
saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. And when I saw her, I
marveled with great amazement. And the angel
